The SoundLab Project
A six-week studio experience where kids learn to shape sound into story.
The SoundLab Project is a guided, small-group creative experience led by producer Rein Vaska. Over six weeks, kids step into a real studio environment to explore how sound works, and how it can be used to express emotion, ideas, and imagination.
This project is the starting point for SoundLab
How the SoundLab Project works
A studio-based creative project
1
The SoundLab project is a six-week studio experience where kids work with sound as a creative material. It’s a space for listening closely, experimenting freely, and shaping ideas through rhythm, texture, and story.
Kids step into a shared studio environment where sound becomes something to explore, question, and transform. The focus is on creative process, collaboration, and discovery; allowing each child to engage with sound in a way that feels personal and meaningful.
Each SoundLab project session blends exploration, experimentation, and focused creative work. Kids move between listening, recording, and building. Sometimes individually, often together.
They spend time:
recording sounds from their environment
exploring rhythm, beats, and voice
working with digital tools like GarageBand
layering, looping, and shaping sound
collaborating in small groups
following ideas where they lead
The studio stays active, curious, and alive; guided, but never rushed.

What the days look like
The SoundLab project is designed for kids ages 8—12 who are curious about sound, music, and creative technology. Some younger participants (age 7) may be considered based on readiness and interest.
No prior music experience is required. This project is a good fit for kids who enjoy experimenting, collaborating, and spending time immersed in creative work.
3
Who this project is for
Over the course of the project, kids collaborate on original sound pieces that grow naturally from their ideas and interests.
These creations often include:
immersive soundscapes inspired by mood or place
rhythmic pieces built from recorded and found sounds
a final original composition shaped by the group
Each piece reflects the collective imagination of the group and the stories they choose to tell through sound.

What kids create
Why the project comes first
5
The SoundLab project builds a shared foundation. Kids learn the tools, rhythms, and creative language of the studio so they can move with confidence and independence.
This foundation allows future SoundLab sessions to remain open, flexible, and expressive. It supports deeper creative flow without needing constant instruction.
