Every generation has words that make perfect sense to the people using them, and sound completely ridiculous to everyone else.
In this workshop, we’re taking a trip through the language of different generations, from expressions kids’ great-grandparents might have used all the way to the slang spreading through schools, group chats and the internet right now.
Where did these words come from? Why did some disappear while others stuck around? How does a word suddenly become the thing everyone is saying? And who decides what a word means in the first place?
We’ll put the kids in the expert seat with the language they know now, then travel backward through different eras and discover words and expressions that belonged to kids and young people before them.
And we’re turning a lot of it into games.
The kids will hear strange, forgotten words and expressions and invent convincing definitions for them. We’ll mix their made-up meanings with the real one, and everyone has to figure out which is true. We’ll experiment with what happens when words and messages travel from person to person, see how easily meanings can change, and compare language across generations and different countries.
Then we’ll see if the kids can create the next one.
They’ll invent a brand-new word, decide what it means and figure out how to use it. Then they’ll try to get it to catch on with the rest of the group.
Because words don’t stay the same. People make them, change them, borrow them, misuse them, retire them, and sometimes turn something completely ridiculous into a word an entire generation understands.
