Why have humans been leaving their mark on walls for thousands of years?
In this Culture + Society workshop, kids will move through time as they decode ancient symbols, explore early forms of visual messaging, uncover the surprisingly human messages preserved on the walls of Pompeii, and trace that story all the way to graffiti + street art today.
We’ll look at why people leave marks behind, what those marks can tell us, and how the meaning of writing on a wall changes depending on who made it, where it appears, and whether they had permission.
Then the kids get to experience it themselves in our Graffiti Challenge. They create, add to + change their own “walls” before we tackle the question:
Art, vandalism,…or both? Who decides?
